Unfortunately, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men have suffered abuse in relationships. Abuse suffered by men from women is usually not reported, as man are perceived to be strong and masculine – how can a female be a perpetrator of domestic abuse? 2 women per week and 30 men per year are killed by their partners in England and Wales, a shocking figure.
The month of October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month and the 25th is Wear Purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Day. Whilst writing the poems for Mask- my research told me that it is not only violence that a perpetrator uses to hurt their partners but also: financial, emotional and sexual and psychological abuse. It is hoped, that with many people wearing purple, conversations about domestic abuse can be started and there can be ways to build healthy relationships, where love is kind and not hurtful. Poem reference: Mask – Grant me.
